The indigenous tofu culture consisted of small operations selling tofu out of white buckets in old Chinatown. Banyan Foods started pretty much under the same circumstances. As a child I remember my parents' days beginning around 3am, and ending at midnight. That's the double-edged sword when you work for yourself, you set your own rigorous hours. My brother and I learned very fast that a family business meant the boundaries between ones work and home often blurred.
I'm proud of our company and how far weve traveled. But the "we" in "Who we are" has changed. Nothing worthwhile is ever a single person's or even a single family's undertaking. Our family business has grown to encompass other families. We have employees that have been with us from nearly the beginning. Much of that is attributable to my mom's longstanding policy of never laying anyone off due to economic downturns. How can you ever let anyone go, when they have families to feed? Sell the corporate gulfstream, cancel the safari to the Galapagos, no more customized license plate that says "eggrolz" whatever it takes, as long as everyone still works.
Banyan Foods simply wouldn't be here today if not for great people like Rafael, Oscar, Hernan, Leoncio, Mario, or Luis. This is our family
