Derst Baking Company produces and distributes over 400 types of bread, rolls, and cakes.
In 1873 Captain Derst became an alderman on City Council under Mayor R. E. Lester.He played a major role in promoting adequate fire protection for the city as well as assisting in the beautification of Savannah's many parks. Now, after more than 137 years his bakery still remains in the family; its board being chaired by his grandson, Edward John Derst, Junior. The 4th generation, Edward John Derst, III heads the Company as President and CEO. D. Morgan Derst as Executive Vice President and Assistant CEO. Catherine Derst Miller as Secretary-Treasurer. The 5th generation of the family are in their apprenticeship now. The original recipe for Captain John's Bread, which is in Captain Derst's own handwriting, is in safe keeping, held by his grandson, Edward J. Derst, Junior. In commemoration of this truly fine patriotic American baker, we have brought back his bread and put it in a brown plastic bag, simulating the bags in which bread was carried in yesteryears.
