The Department of Food Science is a team of scientists, teachers and scholars who are reaffirming our commitment to:
* Guide the undergraduate and graduate education of students preparing for professional and technical careers in Food Science and related areas.
* Identify, develop, and apply the appropriate concepts, theories, and emerging methodologies from the fundamental disciplines of biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, microbiology, and nutrition to the investigation of critical issues in food systems, components, products, and processes.
* Interpret, adapt and extend research information to the North Carolina, national and international food industries.
* Maintain and improve the safety, variety, and quality of food products for the betterment of humankind.
The Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Food Science is offered with a science emphasis or a technology emphasis. The science program is designed for students with interest in graduate school or for those desiring more rigorous science courses for technical careers in the food industry. Students more interested in business opportunities for technically trained individuals find the technology program permits greater flexibility in complementing Food Science coursework with business and agricultural commodity courses.
