The ever-expanding fields of food science and human nutrition encompass a wide range of careers in food-related work, the nation's largest occupational sector. At WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY, the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) is recognized for excellence in both undergraduate and graduate education for individuals interested in these fields. Our goal within the department is to equip the student with the skills necessary to make their dream career a reality. Courses deal with the broad range of interests and concerns which center around the processing, manufacture, safety and distribution of food; the preparation and serving of food; and the nutritional properties of food as related to the needs of people in health and sickness. The department offers three options to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Human Nutrition. The three undergraduate courses of study within this degree which prepare students for food-related careers are: a) Food Science, b) General Dietetics, c) Coordinated Program in Dietetics, and d) Nutritional Sciences. Three minors are also offered: Nutrition and Foods, Food Service Management and Food Science. The university requires a minimum of 16 semester hours, half of which must be in upper-division course work.
