With humble beginnings in the home of husband and wife team, Yordan and Natasha Trenev, NATREN was almost promised success because of Natasha Trenev's background. Originally from Yugoslavia, Natasha's family supplied the royal family of that country with yogurt for many years, beginning with King Peter II. Natasha's parents decided to come to the United States when Natasha was eight years old. Almost immediately upon arrival, Natasha's father founded Continental Culture Specialists. After graduating from UCLA, Natasha joined her family's business for several years. She then took her knowledge of live cultures (as found in yogurt), and expanded her work. Knowing that the bacteria used to produce yogurt could ward off and fight existing ailments, she set out to offer the bacteria in a concentrated, more potent form than found in foods. These bacteria, Natasha would call "Probiotics", which means "for life" (as opposed to the widely known term "antibiotic", or "against life").
