Martin Preferred Foods

Martin Preferred Foods dates back when two brothers, Melvin and Israel Tapick, started Martin Poultry and Egg Company in 1943. They named the company after their brother Martin. In 1970, the brothers added a full line of frozen foods and by the end of the 70’s the company had become a full line grocery supplier. Melvin’s son, Michael joined the company in 1972. The name Martin Food Service reflects its expanded service and customesr base. Michael was appointed President in 1985 and remains in that position today. In 1986, Martin Food Service purchased the wholesale deli distribution division of Longhorn Foods, broadening their distribution base even further. Michael and Israel founded Martin Poultry Trading Company International in 1987. In 1988, a specialized meat division was started to supply beef, veal, pork, and lamb to upscale restaurants throughout Central and East Texas. Several additions, expansions, and remote facilities have been added through the years to keep up with the ever-increasing sales volume. In July 1998, the ownership of Martin Food Service was diversified and the name of the company was changed from Martin Food Service to Martin Preferred Foods, L.P. In November of 1998, Preferred Meats Inc. of Dallas joined the Martin family, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise in the specialty meats and wild game business. Finally, in September 2000 Martin Preferred Foods acquired the Texas operation of Paris Gourmet—an importer and distributor of specialty products.
