Job Descriptions Overview POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Chemist shall provide analytical and technical expertise to support the accurate and timely analysis of ingredients and finished products as required by major stakeholders in the Wm. WRIGLEY Jr. Company. BACKGROUND: Global Quality (GQ) creates and maintains the competitive advantage for the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company by bringing the highest quality product to the consumer. GQ develops implements and evaluates quality systems and analytical expertise to support the business objectives of Wrigley by providing strategic direction, technical standards, and training to its internal customer groups. GQ collaborates with Wrigley customers and suppliers to integrate Wrigley's Quality Systems and Analytical protocol to enhance customer service and products. The GAIT Laboratory is responsible for analytical testing, method evaluation, method development of new, improved, and existing products for the Wrigley Company worldwide.
Reporting Structure: The Senior Chemist reports directly to the Laboratory Supervisor. This position may have direct reports. The Senior Chemist is expected to train team members and provide a high level of technical expertise and support to global partners in Innovation and Supply Chain.
Responsibilities ? Understands product makeup, ingredient chemistry, and key characteristics of gum and confectionary products and packaging materials. ? Applies the appropriate methodology/technology to deformulate gum and non-gum confections, ingredients, and packaging materials. ? Possesses a strong analytical chemistry background with experience in method development and the application of various analytical techniques such as wet chemistry, chromatography, spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. ? Expert in the application of scientific logic for data analysis and interpretation. ? Experience with the analysis of confections, coatings, polymers, structural elucidation. ? Proficient in manufacturing process support, troubleshooting, and foreign matter identification. ? Researches the application of new analytical technology through trade shows, conferences, academics, vendors/suppliers, worldwide web for benchmarking and identification of continuous improvement opportunities. ? Develops and maintains a broad based understanding of Research and Development's new initiatives by partnering with AST, Packaging Innovation, Global Technology, Global Engineering, and Product Developers. ? Provides key insights and solutions to reduce complexity of methodology and technology. ? Implements changes in an efficient manner. ? Leads and manages laboratory projects or activities requiring collaboration with multiple disciplines in the organization. ? May possess a specialized skill such as microscopy, spectroscopy, chromatography, or polymer science. ? Assess/evaluate and determine appropriate methodology and equipment types for feasibility of use with new product types. ? Develops and delivers training to Innovation Team as well as global customers (factories, external labs, or satellite Innovation Centers). ? Helps assure the ongoing education of laboratory staff in quality and analytical principles and philosophies.
Requirements REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: ? PhD/Masters/Bachelors degree in Chemistry preferred or other appropriate scientific degree and laboratory experience ? 8-10 years of professional experience in chemical analysis, instrumental analysis, data interpretation, and method development
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: ? Outstanding leadership and mentoring qualities are required with proven accomplishments in the areas of method development and new analytical technology. ? Solid understanding of gum and confectionary technology strongly preferred. ? Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently. ? Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to present technical information to a variety of audiences. ? Strong people and teamwork skills in creating a participative environment and a high performance team. ? Forward thinking, self directed, capable of making independent actions, and ability to make complex decisions that drive business performance. ? Proficient in quantitative research and analysis including the application of laboratory statistical methods.
