Job Description
Purpose of Position
Responsible for directing, scheduling and controlling all plant engineering/maintenance functions in order to obtain optimum efficiencies from the equipment, utilities and overall facilities.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities
1. Provide engineering counsel and leadership at the plant level.
2. Evaluates and develops engineering projects for the facility. This includes prioritizing the plant’s needs, developing a 3-Year Capital Plan and it’s implementation. Including originating capital appropriation requests, developing project schedules and work teams, writing of contracts, coordinating project activities, controlling project funds, and implementing startup/training procedures as necessary.
3. Recommends equipment/processing systems’ modifications and/or replacement to improve plant performance.
4. Remains up-to-date on technology as it pertains to the plant’s operation.
5. Prepare and submit engineering reports as necessary.
6. Establishes and administers an effective predictive/preventative maintenance program, work order procedures, and adequate parts inventory.
7. Selects and trains maintenance/engineering employees and determines appropriate training and development needs.
8. Develops department’s budgets. Implements and controls approved budgets.
9. Maintains effective communications with the appropriate people both within and outside of the plant.
10. Creates and maintains the appropriate engineering records including equipment records and manuals, drawings and diagrams, inspection reports and legal records as required by the appropriate agencies.
11. Monitor and controls energy consumption and facilitates plans to effective usage.
12. Work closely with outside agencies in their respective fields, i.e., OSHA, EPA, FDA, etc., to insure plant compliance with current regulations.
13. Performs other various duties as may be assigned.
Education/Training/Experience
1. Must have a developed facilitative/coaching style of management and pursue non-directed activities in dealing with plant opportunities.
2. Should have a Bachelors of Science Degree from an accredited college in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering. Also must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and be computer literate with fluency in spreadsheets and AutoCAD.
3. Should have five to ten years of related experience in the food industry dealing with: Project work, preventative maintenance administration, guidance of the maintenance workforce, establishing and operating to a budget, utility utilization, EPA and OSHA requirements, knowledge of GMP's, writing and justifying of projects.

Inside Kroger:
1. Legal Department for counsel concerning contractual situations and environmental regulatory requirements.
2. Product Development concerning new products and refinements and changes to existing products.
3. Reliability Engineering concerning safety, sanitation, and regulatory requirements.
4. Procurement for purchased items.
5. Human Resources for matters concerning personnel.
6. Plant Operations Management for maintenance operations and engineering items pertinent to specific plants.
7. Manufacturing management for special projects, three-year plan input and review, and periodic counsel.
10. Sales Departments when their plans relate to changes in plant capacity or equipment.
11. Internal communications are very frequent and extensive, and are extremely important part of the Plant Engineer’s job.
Outside Kroger:
1. Architect/engineering firms, contractors, equipment and/or services suppliers, utility companies management, public officials who may have bearings on plant related items.
