Job Description
Packaging materials engineering position that develops, sustains, and improves packaging material supply and associated equipment performance throughout our food production operations. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required: • Plan and coordinate the design and development of new and revised packaging materials and structures. • Be responsible for structural specifications and integrity of packaging materials and components in compliance with quality standards, Federal regulations, and customer/marketing objectives. • Consult with operations personnel regarding packaging material improvements. • Develop compatible protective packaging for food products. • Originate and present new packaging concepts to customer or marketing. • Assess and resolve packaging material problems arising in production or in the field. • Collect, prepare and present packaging material information used in food packaging development proposals, project planning networks, or other tools used to manage new and existing product projects. • Direct packaging material supplier designs and developments of new packaging introductions, and monitor progress to ensure timely implementation. • Direct the preparation of engineering drawings or other packaging material specifications and associated graphics. • Develop and issue detailed specifications for procurement of packaging materials and associated packaging components for retrofit to new and existing equipment. • Ensure that packaging is within compliance of applicable State, Federal, and/or carrier guidelines and regulations. • Plan and direct the implementation of new or revised packaging materials, in conjunction with required pre-shipment testing to approve new or revised packages. • Develop pallet specifications for incoming packaging and outgoing products to maximize warehouse utilization and minimize shipping damage. • Maintain a high level of professionalism and current technology awareness by seeking and evaluating new concepts and materials as they appear to relate to packaging technology through personal contacts, professional society memberships and trade journals. • Work to address production issues related to packaging Requirements BS in packaging material technology and/or engineering, with prior work experience, food manufacturing exposure, and packaging materials background, as outlined below: Specifically 3rd party packaging material supply and fulfillment associated with various direct food contact film structures, SBS style cartoning with higher quality graphics, RSC type corrugate, pallets, labels, code dates, etc. • Excellent packaging material specification skills, as it relates to improving vendor performance and operational efficiencies. Must be able to develop and specify packaging materials that are complete, clear, and concise (i.e. diligence to ensure project successes). • Strong communication and presentation skills. • Experience working with packaging material suppliers: vendor selection, relationship maintenance, and negotiating costs versus specifications. • Knowledge and understanding of contract documents, packaging equipment, basic labeling control practices, and developing/managing projects (i.e. to a specific time line and within cost budgets). • Desire to work with and provide technical support to product development, R&D, operations (production), technical services, purchasing, sales, marketing, quality assurance, and finance. • Ability to work with technical services and procurement personnel on value analysis, cost reduction, documentation and other problem solving issues/programs (task forces and special projects), as necessary to evaluate and recommend most cost effective and capable packaging materials. • Interact with production facilities to develop packaging material technology Master Plan for site. • Innovative thinking and desire to look at new approaches. • High energy level, sense of urgency, and “roll up your shirt sleeves” work ethic.
