JOB DESCRIPTION:

KEY RESULT AREAS:

The Product Development Manager is directly responsible for providing technical leadership on assigned research and development projects for the Bremner Food Group business units. This includes improvement of existing products, emulation of targeted products as well as pro-actively initiating unique new products in cookie, cracker, snack nut and candy categories for key customers.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides leadership by participating in the investigation, planning, and execution of difficult new product and process development projects from conception through established product based on assigned objectives.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills and ability to contribute creative solutions and technical expertise on complex and multiple ongoing projects.
  • Accurately develops or approves all written specifications for raw materials and finished products, to include label, nutritional and customer data required for assigned products, new products or modified existing products.
  • Functions professionally with outside product and process development consultants, as required.
  • Ensures that all assigned products are manufactured in compliance with Federal, State and Local regulatory requirements and within guidelines established by the customer.
  • Develops and maintains project plans, identifying critical paths and resources required.
  • Leads and drives Reformulation Cost Management program.

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages time, resources and project work to ensure the accurate and timely completion of high priority projects and critical non-project related work.
  • Maintains accurate records of work activities and ensures that other food technologists can follow progress of technical aspects of projects documented in approved lab notebooks.
  • Assists other food technologist on portions of projects to ensure completion of the department’s high priority projects and critical non-project work, when assigned.
  • Performs in a timely manner, any other duties assigned.

    Food Safety Production Areas:

  • Notify Supervision of any repairs or adjustments that are required.
  • Understand, observe, and comply with the handling and usage of the color-coded container policy while in the Production Areas.
  • Perform all duties necessary to meet American Institute of Baking (AIB), Company, and/or Government requirements / standards as prioritized by the Company.
  • Inform Management of ANY Food Safety or Quality issues or of any processes, which become noncompliant with specified requirements.
  • Ability to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of nonconformity's relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the product, processes, quality system, or safety system.
  • Identify and record any problems relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the ingredients, processes, quality system, or safety system.
  • Controls further processing or delivery of nonconforming product in terms of Food Safety and Quality issues until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.
  • Inform Management of ANY Food Safety or Quality issues or of any processes, which become noncompliant with specified requirements.
  • In the absence of immediate supervisor, will assume necessary operational and administrative duties.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequent use of personal computer; typing and monitor viewing.
  • Will travel 50-75% of the time.
  • Periodic lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Periodic pushing/pushing up to 25 pounds.

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. Degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Microbiology, Nutrition, Engineering or a related field is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in Food Manufacturing, Quality or Operations.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in cookie and/or cracker Research & Development.
  • Must have the ability to coach and train in these areas, including statistical process and control tools and techniques; Supervisor experience a plus.
  • Candidates must articulate strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge in food chemistry and statistical analysis as used in designing experiments and measuring process capabilities.
  • Ability to interact effectively with department, company or customer associates and experience in a team-oriented environment is required.
  • Creativity, pro-activity and the ability to think outside the box are also key attributes. The willingness to accept or create new ideas and take chances on new product development is also preferred.
  • Efficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
