Position: Plant Project Engineer
Reports to: Plant Mechanical Engineering Manager
Salaried, Exempt.
JOB FUNCTION:
The purpose of this job is to provide project management and engineering services at the plant level and enable the plant to meet goals in the areas of manufacturing facilities, systems and infrastructure. Support, implement and maintain food safety and quality practices as required through SQF. This position will be responsible for completing job duties in a manner that supports all plant safety, food safety, quality and environmental practices.
JOB ACTIVITIES/DUTIES:
- Manage multiple assigned engineering projects establishing manpower, budgets, scheduling, equipment and materials.
- Control project scope, schedule, costs and quality via project management skills.
- Select and manage equipment suppliers and vendors.
- Select, hire and manage engineering consultants and construction contractors.
- Stay abreast of, evaluate and select appropriate equipment and technology.
- Specify and design cereal processing, packaging and infrastructure systems.
- Prepare reports: capital expenditure requests, monthly reports, etc.
- Conduct feasibility studies and cost benefit analysis.
- Provide construction management and startup management.
- Maintain an up to date awareness of Federal, State, and Local engineering codes and regulations.
- Review ergonomics, safety requirements and sanitation/GMP/food safety aspects of assigned projects
- Participate and be an active member of the engineering department to foster teamwork and provide excellent customer service.
- Provide training and educational services to all departments when applicable.
- Communicate with internal customers regularly to obtain input and share project plans throughout project life cycle.
- Supervise and manage project construction activities with focus on personal and food safety.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
4-year Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related engineering discipline required.
EXPERIENCE:
Extensive working knowledge of project management in a continuous production plant environment required. Food Processing knowledge preferred.
Minimum of 5 years engineering experience in operations, project management, process design
and contractor supervision in a process environment.
SKILLS:
Proven management experience of complex projects is required. Must be well rounded with a grasp of many engineering disciplines as well as plant operations and construction. Ability to formulate and execute a complex plan that, when complete, will meet project or plant goals. Project scheduling experience is mandatory. Sound analytical thinking; ability to design, construct and startup processing and utility systems. Must be able to perform engineering calculations to support plant operations and improvement projects. Must be proficient in Microsoft Project, Excel and Word. Experience with AutoCad is a plus.
MANAGEMENT SKILLS:
Ability to manage small to major complex projects from concept to completion; Alternatively, must effectively manage multiple concurrent small projects; ability to develop and organize an effective design team to meet project goals, either from in house or outside company.
OTHER:
Occasional travel required for project meetings, supplier/consultant meetings, and inspections. Must be able to read, write and communicate in the English language.
