Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION (as described in position description):

The Safety Supervisor is responsible for providing leadership to the Allendale Safety & Health process to ensure risk reduction, injury prevention, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.  This position serves as the location subject matter expert for safety and health; administers safety and health policies and programs; acts as the plant liaison for Corporate Safety initiatives; and partners with the plant operations team as a safety resource.  This position shall emphasize employee engagement in a continuous improvement environment.  Position responsibilities are in the following functional areas:  safety training and education, safety inspections, engagement in the safety process, regulatory compliance, incident analysis and response, PSM/RMP/HAZMAT, and Workers Compensation/claims management.

The Safety Supervisor reports directly to the Plant Human Resources Manager and indirectly to the Corporate Operations Safety Manager.  The security staff report directly to the Safety Supervisor.  The Safety Supervisor has a strong peer-based relationship with the Human Resources Generalist and Training Foreperson.  In addition, the Safety Supervisor has a direct working relationship with the plant management and supervisory team with occasional contact with regulatory agencies and training sources. 

The Allendale plant is a non-union manufacturing facility.  The environment is results-oriented and fast paced with rapid growth and changing needs.  The climate is people oriented with an emphasis on union prevention.

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Champions the Company Safety Process to achieve a world-class safety culture by gaining the involvement of others to drive awareness, promote positive attitudes and produce safe behaviors.  Thereby achieving the ultimate goal of shared responsibility, individual accountability, and safety ownership by every employee. (30%)

2. Directs and manages the safety training process for the plant with the goal of obtaining 100% achievement with new hire, monthly compliance, and PSM/ emergency team drills & exercises as planned. (20%)

3. Manages the plant safety process to insure the facility continuously strives to meet and/or exceed applicable regulatory standards.  Helps drive PSM/HAZMAT continuous improvement efforts. (20%)

4. Drives the hazard recognition, audit, and inspection process at the plant with a prioritized corrective action system that effectively implements fixes in a timely manner.  Critical will be the ability to implement and oversee other’s involvement to cover the numerous audits and inspections required as well help direct others with the priority of corrective actions. (20%)

5. Oversee the quality and timeliness of loss control investigations that seek out root causes and forever fixes.  Oversees claims management and workers compensation. (10%)

POSITION REQUIREMENTS (“musts”)
• Ability to relocate to Michigan or surrounding area (if not local)
• Ability to support a 24 hour operation
• Bachelor Degree in Occupational Safety & Health or equivalent degree
• Minimum of 3 years of safety leadership in a manufacturing setting
• Strong leadership with demonstrated skills and ability to coach and develop
• Must be able and willing to work a flexible work schedule to accommodate all/any shift depending on production and/or project needs
• Strong potential for continued career growth with flexibility to relocate if needed
• Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, results-oriented work environment

PREFERRED CHARACTERISTICS (“wants”)
• Prior work experience in food industry and/or pharmaceutical production or similar process
• Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
• Strong interpersonal or people-oriented presence
• Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills
• Understanding of financial accountabilities.
• ASP or CSP certification

EQUIPMENT PROFICIENCY
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
• Experience with SAP integrated system is preferred
