Heinz North America Role: Research Scientist Reports to: Manager, Tomato Technology Location: Modesto, CA
Heinz North America is the world's leading producer of tomatoes and tomato seeds. We are searching for a food science Research Scientist who wants to become an industry thought leader in the science and research of tomatoes. The Tomato Technology group will process 300+ different tomato varieties into 2 to 10 paste processes/ types. It is critical to the development of new tomato varieties as well as Heinz Competitive Advantage in Tomato Products.
This opportunity handles research on the chemistry, biochemistry and rheology of tomatoes and tomato in-process and finished products with the opportunity to build their expertise working next to the top tomato experts in the food sciences landscape.
In addition, the incumbent will lead projects for future development of the Heinz portfolio through the oversight and supervision of the Tomato Technology Research Lab in Stockton, CA. Their ability to innovate and offer best in class solutions on laboratory technology and the selection of process monitoring equipment will enable the organic growth of Heinz. In addition, they will lead cross-functional projects within our Heinz Innovation Center with R&D, quality and food safety colleagues located in Warrendale, PA.
Who would be successful?
' Heinz is searching for a research scientist who has a solid understanding of the agricultural cycles and seasonality of food development.
' A top candidate will have a Master's or PhD in Food Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry or Processing Technology. If the candidate has less than a Master's level of education, we seek at least 5 years of agricultural science or research experience.
' Although tomato exposure is helpful, it is more important that the top candidate has the attitude, analytic skills and ability to search for practical applications of the chemical, biochemical and rheological properties of tomatoes to tomato variety development, tomato processing and tomato products and the willingness to learn the key properties of tomato production.
' This role is best for someone with demonstrated project leadership and self-initiative to drive multiple initiatives to deliver outstanding results.
' A change leader who enjoys the chance to influence and collaboratively lead at all levels of the organization with clear and concise communications will thrive in the research environment within Heinz.
We also seek someone who is able and willing to travel in the general Modesto area to lead the research lab as well as help oversee the tomato production in the peak season. In addition, there could be occasional travel (less than 10%) to the Innovation Center in Warrendale, PA or some of our leading tomato production facilities to work alongside development colleagues for dynamic cross-functional projects.
