We are currently seeking an energetic team player to lead our Research & Development Department. Must be a self starter with an entrepreneurial spirit to be successful in this role. Direct and lead all Research & Development requirements to support the needs of operations, sales, marketing, and customers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Lead and direct the work of R&D employees. Plan, assign and direct the work of subordinate staff and provide support for production operations during all hours of production. Oversee laboratory resources including staff, materials and equipment.

Support the accomplishment of company directives and specifically be able to provide “Big Picture” analysis/advice in regards to products, process, and programs and communicate to departments regarding R&D issues in an effective manner.

Provide leadership and support for the successful achievement of all R&D innovation initiatives and programs. Maintain consistent contact with the sales and marketing team to support building business cases for new opportunities and ideation initiatives.

Provide technical project and program leadership for all customer related R&D initiatives. Confer with customers to resolve technical issues, as required.

Establish R&D metrics and achieves same through the R&D team.

Lead R&D requirements for all new product projects to assure successful transition to product commercialization.

Provide management oversight for projects and programs such as product prototypes, shelf life, analytical, quality audits, cost of quality, quality holds, HACCP, GMP’s, etc. to assure overall objectives for these initiatives are achieved.

Provides support and required resources for the NPR process.

Manage and assure R&D information library, including formulations, S.O.P.s, Ross, etc are up to date, accurate and meet the needs of the company.

Identify and resolve R&D issues and problems for plant, sales and customers.

Oversee product cost reductions through cost benefit analysis techniques (ingredient substitutions, etc.)

Analyze, design and deliver technical training to support the development of R&D staff and production employees.

Develop processes and packaging standards that comply with governmental regulations regarding food safety and labeling.

Observe all safety rules and regulations for self and others.

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies and applicable state and federal laws.

Coach, mentor and encourage subordinate staff.

Monitor subordinates attendance. Review and approve vacation time. Authorize all overtime. Verify and sign time cards.

Evaluate and appraise employee’s performance and follow-up with proper documentation.

Administer and document disciplinary procedures, both verbal and written, when necessary.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science / Technology and eight years of related “wet” R&D experience including four years of managerial responsibility with project leadership accountability and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience in a production environment (ex. scale-ups, start-ups), ideation, QA and sensory analysis experience necessary. (MS degree desired and culinary degree beneficial)
