R&D Beverage Technologist
Concord, NC
This position will be responsible for:
Product Development – Focus on Core Coffee and Iced Tea
· New product bench formulation (e.g. creates coffee blend matches or new blends)
- New product evaluation (e.g. sensory panel, shelf-life)
- Improves existing products by optimizing attributes of competitive products
- Interacts with suppliers to obtain samples, ingredients and information
- New formulations into production, interface with purchasing, manufacturing, QA
- Works with co-packers on product formulation and production
- Product specification, labels and nutritional statements
- Interactive demonstrations with customers
- Optimizes ingredient/formula costs
Research & Analysis
- Applies research techniques to solve problems, prove concepts, or to test hypothesis
- Utilizes sound research methods; chooses the correct research approach
- Collects, interprets, and reports fact-based data in a compelling way
Project Management
- Manages projects, setting goals, keeping time-lines and getting to outcomes
- Keeps excellent records and archive data for easy recall
- Interfaces with other departments as part of x-functional team
Sales Support
- Receives requests from Sales, scopes projects, takes appropriate action
- Goes on sales calls as requested; capable of working with R&D on customer site
Process Management & Improvement
- “Owner” of the business plan process for the induction of new items
- Analyzes SKU performance and recommends items for discontinuance
- Finds ways to improve manufacturing efficiencies
Qualified applicants will possess the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in food science or related science is preferred
- Minimum of three years in product development is preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Thorough understanding of food science principles
- Competent computer skills in all Windows based products
- Comprehends manufacturing processes and how they related to Product Development
- Knowledge of ingredients, processing and formulation
- Ability to develop thorough knowledge of coffee and brewing principles; ability to be a certified S&D “Cupper”
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Good analytical skills including mathematical reasoning and statistics
- Strong organizational skills, excellent time management skills
- Problem Solving Skills
- Self-motivated, hard working, reliable, accurate
- Outstanding presenter; really connects with the audience; can translate technical information to non-technical people
- Experience and or knowledge with nutritional data generation and regulatory requirements from the USDA and FDA as well as state and local health and food safety codes
