Literally "South of Houston Street," SoHo is a 26-square-block area in lower Manhattan whose streets have never been paved with gold, but where sparks have always flown. Art and commerce, the bizarre and the practical, upstarts and institutions are always colliding on the sidewalks.
The streets are dense and close. The dreams are palpable. But the former industrial lofts, where artists staked their claim 25 years ago, are soaring and spacious; their mere size demands huge visions, boundless energy and grit. The only thing constant in SoHo is change. And Dean & DeLuca.
The corner grocery store grew up with the neighborhood. It happens to occupy a busy corner in what has become the most vibrant artists' haven in the world. In these early days, Joel Dean and Giorgio DeLuca traipsed around the world to find artisan-produced, lovingly made foods that pleased their customers. Of course, the store's founders were also pleasing themselves. Since the day they opened, there's been a certain symmetry.
The same generation that restored SoHo, for instance, also changed the way America ate. They wouldn't settle merely for the first sun-dried tomato, extra-virgin olive oil or balsamic vinegar in the country. No, they wanted the best. They didn't want a basic milk-and-egg store, they wanted one that fired their imaginations, challenged their tastes and turned dinner into a creative exercise.
