Our goal is to create a product in which the true taste of the leaves comes through. We don't pulverize, process or concentrate our tea leaves. Instead we brew the whole leaf in spring water in a way that Shen Nung would still recognize. We might add a touch of natural sweetener – enough to accentuate the tea's natural flavor, but not so much that the sweetener drowns out the tea taste.
We try to sell a product that is what it says it is. It sounds simple, but it's striking how rarely this happens, particularly in the beverage business. You won't see claims on our label about how our tea will cure cancer or renew sex drive. We also strive to live up to our name in the way we conduct our business. We do this in every way we can—whether we are working with growers and suppliers, answering our customer's questions or trying to leave a lighter environmental footprint.
Tea is consumed by some of the world's wealthiest populations, yet it is produced by some of the poorest. We hope that by introducing new teas and exciting new tastes under the Honest Tea name, we can help to create greater economic opportunity in communities that are seeking to become more self-sufficient. We try also to present our teas in a culturally authentic context, using our labels to illustrate the tea's origin or story—a Crow Native American Chief, a Chinese rubbing from the Tang Dynasty, an oil painting from Guatemala or a hand-drawn sketch from Haarlem South Africa.
