The Karn company was established as a retail shop in the 1920’s, in the former “Central Market” in downtown Columbus, Ohio.
The company moved to it’s current Taylor Avenue location in 1948 and opened the slaughterhouse operation in the mid 1960’s. Karn adapted it’s business to accommodate the growth in urban and rural population by servicing grocery stores and butcher shops that had evolved throughout the country replacing the once centralized market places.
In 1971 the company was incorporated in Ohio and the name was changed to Karn Packing Co. In an effort to offer a greater selection to it’s customers the processing of ground beef was added to the business in 1983.
In 1990 the company ceased use of it’s slaughterhouse facility and expanded it’s meat processing facility; while continuing to service it’s existing customers with boxed beef shipped in from the major packing companies throughout the Midwest. The company’s name was changed to Karn Meats, Inc., to advertise that it did more than kill and pack beef. A cooking facility was added in 1999, to further specialize in catering to the foodservice industry.
Today, Karn Meats remains one of the Midwest’s largest independent processors of raw meat products and producers of cooked meat products. The company services both the foodservice industry through national restaurant chains and distributors and the retail market through large grocery chains.
