Kazimierz Monkiewicz began his pushcart handmade sausage business in 1909, shortly after he and his wife Helen emigrated from Poland and settled in Chelsea, Massachusetts. His handmade specialty sausages were delivered fresh to his customers in his horse drawn wagon. He and Helen grew the business into a retail store and the next generation refocused it primarily on wholesaling.
90 years later, not only does Kayem manufacture products for the delis but they continue to distribute them. The product line now includes hot dogs, traditional Italian sausages, deli meats, and fresh gourmet chicken sausage. Some of our well known brands include: Kayem Old Tyme Hot Dogs, Genoa Sausage, Triple M Spiral Hams and Al Fresco Chicken Sausage.
The Chelsea plant, with over 500 employees, has grown with the latest addition to over 200,000 square feet. The new addition includes a state of the art continuous Frankfurt operation. In addition to the Chelsea plant, Kayem operates the Genoa Sausage company in Woburn MA, which is the largest fresh sausage manufacturer in New England.
Kayem chose to seek ISO 9001 International Standards registration four years ago, as it has moved into foreign markets. Adhering to the ISO 9000 standards served as a basis for the company to put its existing quality management system in place and fine tune it even more to comply with HACCP. ISO 9000 is recognized as a strict measure of quality throughout the world.
