The University's Department of Food Science is one of the most respected departments of its kind in the world, with a unique combination of teaching and research laboratories and a large, well-equipped pilot plant for manufacturing a wide range of food products. Faculty members are actively engaged in teaching, research, and service in the areas of chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, food safety, physical properties, biotechnology, nutrition, and food processing. In addition, we rely on guest lecturers from industry to provide both a business and scientific perspective.
Majors in Food Science can tailor their degree to their interests. There are two areas of emphasis:
Food Science and Technology
Students concentrating in food science and technology study the basic sciences and the application of chemistry, engineering and microbiology to the production of the food supply. The Food Science and Technology curriculum meets all the requirements for The Institute of Food Technologists.
Food, Health and the Environment
Students concentrating in Food, Health and the Environment first study basic food science principles. After taking basic core courses, students can build their program according to their interests within the curriculum options of Food, Health, and the Environment.
