The story of Western Bagel starts with Dave Ustin, who like his father, was a master bagel baker. Dave Ustin saw an opportunity to educate and enrich the West Coast palate. He left New York City for Los Angeles determined to make his mark on bagel-barren California.
Dave was taught the art of bagel baking from his father Louis Ustin, a Russian emigrant, who came to America after World War I. His formal introduction to the business of bagels came at the tender age of nine.
Dave spent four hours every Sunday counting bagels in the back of a delivery truck, for which he earned 25 cents. By thirteen, he was fully employed in a Bronx bakery.
In 1946, Dave and his wife Ethel arrived in Southern California, and by January, 1947, the original Western Bagel plant was opened in Los Angeles. A decade later, it relocated to its present address in the San Fernando Valley.
Dave would never have guessed that over half a century later Western Bagel would have grown into the world class operation that it is today.
With national and international distribution as well as company-owned retail stores, Western Bagel continues to grow and prosper. Today, Steve serves as president, representing a third generation of bagel bakers, with the fourth waiting in the wings.
