In 1892, the founder of Del Papa Distributing arrived in Texas from Tuscany, Italy. Ten-year-old Omero Del Papa began his career in his uncle’s grocery store in Galveston, working for the princely sum of a dime a day.
For hundreds of years, people from his homeland had been influenced by the artistic fruits of the Renaissance period, stimulated by the likes of Michelangelo, Donatello, and da Vinci. Even as a child, Omero had a special appreciation for excellence and a keen perception of genuine quality – traits that would guide his future business decisions and still exist as benchmarks within the company he began.
In 1903, Omero Del Papa opened his own grocery store in Galveston. In 1920, at the age of 28, he returned to Italy and wed Giorgina. From this union came their children Velma, Ivaldo, Jenny, Omero, Jr., and Lawrence.
It was also in 1920 that Del Papa converted his retail grocery business into a wholesale establishment, which would ultimately become today’s Del Papa Distributing Company.
By 1930, Omero Del Papa, Sr., had achieved even greater business successes, and two of his sons, Ivaldo and Omero, Jr., had joined their father in the firm.
It was also in 1930 that Anheuser-Busch selected Del Papa as a wholesale distributor of its products, including malt, syrup, baker’s yeast, soft drinks, and Bevo (near beer).
