- Ernie Van Asperen had spent most of his life in the beverage business, for many years operating over eighty Ernie's Liquors Stores throughout California. He and wife Virginia decided to make a lifestyle change, to the mellow pace of the largely undiscovered Napa Valley. Shortly after their move to the hills west of historic St. Helena, gentleman grape grower, Ernie decided to learn home winemaking. After their first successful vintage, the couple, along with long-time friend Charlie Abela, decided to try selling their wines to a few retailers.
