Sea Safari , who employs over 350 people, purchases live Atlantic Blue Crabs daily from over one hundred crab docks and thousands of Independent crabbers along the Atlantic Coast, the Gulf of Mexico and the Chesapeake Bay.
Sea Safari, LTD was founded in 1973 on the Pungo River in Belhaven, North Carolina. The Pungo River flows into the famous Pamlico Sound providing Sea Safari access to the largest and healthiest varieties of finfish and shellfish on the Atlantic Coast. Atlantic Blue Crabs, known for having the sweetest meat of any crabs in the world, are harvested in crab traps and brought to Sea Safari's docks live daily.
By remaining dedicated to the highest quality product and service standards, Sea Safari has grown to be the largest producer of Atlantic Blue crab in the United States. Sea Safari expansions began in 1986 with the purchase of Blue Channel Corporation "Harris Brand Crabmeat" plant in Belhaven, NC. Blue Channel, previously owned by Borden products, was the pioneer of the pasteurization of crabmeat. This acquisition gave Sea Safari a tremendous advantage -- access to Blue Channel's fifty years of research and development. In 1993, Sea Safari purchased the rights to the brand names of Belhaven Fish & Oyster Company.
In 1996, Sea Safari acquired Cryotech Food Systems, Inc. in Aurora, NC, previously owned by Landry's Restaurant Group which includes Joe's Crab Shack Restaurants. Included were the rights to all the Cryogenic crab freezi
