Well known throughout the world in the late 1800's, Nellie Melba was a woman ahead of her time with a vivacious appetite for life. It was in 1897 when, concerned about her stylish figure, Ms. Melba sent the famed Parisian chef Auguste Escoffier back to the kitchen after complaining that her bread for her pate was too thick. Escoffier returned to Ms. Melba's table with a thinly sliced piece of toasted bread for her, and promptly named it Melba Toast in her honor. Later, in 1932, Bert Weil developed the original patent for the Melba oven and started the Devonsheer Melba Company. Nellie Melba's name would go on forever, as she had always said it would. In 1940 the Melba Round was developed and in 1945 it truly gained widespread acceptance when the first individual restaurant packages appeared. Eventually, Devonsheer Melba Company became part of the Old London Foods brand name to form a larger array of available Melba products. Today, Old London Foods has over 20 different flavors available in Melba Toasts and Rounds.
