In 1873, 17-year-old Elizabeth Mimms crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Baltimore from Germany. The following year, she married another German immigrant named Peter Schmidt, and over the years the couple had six children. In 1986, the Schmidt’s started a small retail baking business in their home. Elizabeth would bake delicious loads of bread and Peter would deliver them around the neighborhood via horse and buggy. Soon enough, word spread about Mrs. Schmidt’s delicious bread. As the customer list grew, so did the company. 125 years later and Schmidt Baking Company is one of the largest independent bakeries in America.
Today, the Schmidt Baking Company employs approximately 860 people in its 11 distribution centers, making it the largest independent premium line wholesale baker in the mid-Atlantic region. The Schmidt Baking Company produces 130 million bakery items annually between its two bakeries in Baltimore and Fullerton, Maryland.
In 2004, H&S Bakery Purchased Schmidt Baking Company.
