Recently there was a research study done by Mintel to see what bakery items Canadians love most. The research concluded that some of Canada’s favourite baked goods include muffins, doughnuts, pastries and cakes but by far the nation’s most popular baked good is cookies!
Joel Gregoire, senior food and drink analyst at Mintel said “Cookies take the number one slot in terms of popular sweet baked goods, even beating doughnuts – possibly the most intrinsically Canadian of all sweet baked goods. Given their flexibility and portability, it is not surprising that cookies are eaten more than other sweet baked goods,”
Given the consensus that from coast to coast cookies are the top but for the other baked goods, it seems generations don’t see eye-to-eye on their other favourites. Consumers aged 18-44 are more likely to eat doughnuts, bars and cupcakes than consumers 45+ but consumers who are 45+ are more likely to eat pies.
In their research, they found the younger generations prefer more portable bakery goods and stated pie makers will be looking for innovative ideas to meet the portable need. Another thing they found out is 2 in 5 Canadians are concerned about the amount of sugar that is in bakery goods. While 65% of Canadians agree it’s okay to indulge in their favourite bakery goods once in awhile.
The United States and UK both had apple pie as their favourite bakery good. This is totally opposite from Canada, but the Canadian bakery industry is wanting to change that, they want pies to be Canadians favourites and making them on-the-go! In the U.S. chocolate chips cookies is ranked second favourite but in the UK they are ranked 7th! There are a variety of factors as to why there is a difference but a huge factor in due to the different cultures.
